‘Being’ Grounded demystified
In a practical sense what does it mean to be grounded?
Many of us can relate to being told to ground as part of self-care or meditation practice. I practice grounding many times during my day, especially when holding space for others, and supporting clients with being grounded is an integral component in all my sessions and workshops.
Why is grounding important? How do we take it from a concept to an embodied tool? ‘Being’ grounded suggests it’s very nature. Grounding enables us to attain & sustain our ‘
It can be done with a thought, an intention, or more mindfully as part of a deeper process or practice.
Why do we ground?
We are electrical beings. We have a frequency and charge, and our nervous system is an electrical system. Electricity needs to ground to discharge. Grounding, therefore, enables us to let go of excess nervous system activity, overstimulation and overthinking, and to reset our flight fight activity, thereby reducing stress. So it makes sense then that this simple tool can be used to reset, release and neutralise what you accumulate throughout every day activity. It is
Grounding is a simple way to release that which is not ours or our own stuff that isn’t serving us anymore.
On a deeper level grounding is part of our symbiotic relationship with the earth. She is there to support us and we are there to give her feedback about those that inhabit her body, the organism (us) and its health and therefore her health, the health of the planet. We are also there to anchor into her body the frequency and light to support her to also do the same. This way her ‘support’ can draw to us through the earth (her body) all that supports us in our physical realities whether that be connections, information or tools.
How to ground
We know why it is a good practice but how do we do it?

Here are some grounding ‘tools’
Environmental tools – places where we feel more grounded, ocean, barefoot on the grass. O
Intention tools – focusing on the soles of the feet as a way to bring awareness into how we connect with the earth. Visualising light moving through your body with the breath into the earth, following it deeply into the centre of the earth. Another energetic grounding ‘focus’ is to bring your awareness to the base chakra located in the perineum of the body. Breathing into this area with the intention of softening will also support grounding and connection.
Salt baths or foot baths – Epsom salt baths or salt baths are a great way to cleanse energy and to ground. To repolarise our ionic nature similarly to if we were near the ocean.
Partnering up with others – Connecting and collaborating with others is a great way for energy to become more coherent. It can also help us to ‘feel’ more deeply into the grounding process, making it more palpable. This way we are giving ourselves a reference point to return to in our own practice. Craniosacral therapy and other bodywork enables a therapist to hold space for us to connect, with our body and energy, and to ground more deeply into our inherent healing nature.
